Barboursville winery with its country Italian decor is one of the largest and most established of the vineyards/wineries in Virginia founded in 1976 by the Zonins. The Zonin family has been making wine since 1821 and currently operates Italy's largest privately owned vineyard and winemaking complex. Approximately 8 miles south of James Madison’s Montpelier and 20 miles north of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in the same mountain chain, Barboursville was settled as a substantial plantation by Thomas Barbour, in the mid-1700s, occupying somewhat more than 5 times the estate’s present size of 900-plus acres.
For a $6 tasting fee you can sample 18 wines. As far as tastings go there are many more verities and a much larger sampling than most other wineries. The staff was nice, reasonably knowledgeable, and a few a little too chatty about things other than wine. The property is more all-inclusive with a formal restaurant Palladio (named after Thomas Jefferson's architect open for lunch and dinner) that marries local gourmet food to their wines. There is also an old inn and small cottages that you can rent out to stay overnight. There are even old estate ruins of governor Barbour, a friend and contemporary of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Barboursville plantation was designed by Thomas Jefferson until it was destroyed by accidental fire at Christmas 1884.
This is truly a destination location and seemingly the granddaddy of the Virginia vineyards in this area. They are very serious about their wine making and absolutely no feel of it being "gimicky". The Zonins, the current owners, are from Italian decent and with admitted difficulty, have managed to grow several varietals of grapes that have created award winning wines. Gold Medals include, Governor’s Cups, Monticello Cups, and introductions of new wines of national prominence - Barboursville Brut, Phileo, Malvaxia, and Octagon. Of their white wines I liked the SauvignonBlanc and their Chardonnay Reserve, and the Vintage Rose was pretty fair. I felt that their reds excelled over the whites with particular kudos to the Nebbiolo Reserve, PetitVerdot Reserve and their most
recognized local wine Octagon (last two not available in tasting). Of their dessert winesI liked the Malvaxia Reserve and Phileo. (They do offer discounts on purchases over 6 bottles.)
Just 72 mles from Richmond, 100 miles from DC and 17 miles from Charlottesville, if you are visiting the area, whether on a wine tour of the state, or vacation through Virginia's vast historical sites, a visit to Barboursville winery is a must see! Remember there is even a historical Inn and romantic little cottages on site. Also connected to the property is Palladio Restaurant which is one of the best in the region. www.palladiorestaurant.com
