Barren Ridge is located on a high ridge in Virginia’s Shenandoah and gets its name from the unusual weather pattern which directs rain clouds away from the ridge. These effects coupled with the near constant breeze, helps to provide an optimum growing environment for grapes. Shenandoah Valley is considered a semi-arid climate due to its close proximity to two mountain ranges. It had formerly been the family apple orchard.
Their wines were solidly drinkable. There were no really bad wines, but also none that stood out as spectacular either. I would give all the wines a 3 to a 4 star rating out of 5. I would say more of their white's excelled over their reds, but my favorite wine was a red 2009 Meritage Reserve. They have a casual, nice tasting room with a nice fire place the cooler days. It is a refurbished barn that had been used for apple and now turned into a state of the art winery. The furniture around the fire place was not as inviting as I would recommend (metal furniture with cushions), but outside of that, they did a great job of hosting. They are very dog friendly and have their own winery dog that roams the property, stopping for the occasional hello from tasters on the porch, or in the tasting room. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about their product. The outdoor seating was attractive and has a nice view overlooking the property. They do not have any food available for purchase but invite you to bring your own.
We had an enjoyable time on our visit to Barren Ridge. I would say Barren Ridge as a worthwhile stop.
Barren Ridge Winery is located 984 Barren Ridge Rd in Fishersville VA about 30 minutes from historical Charlottesville and 10 minutes from Waynesboro. Their $8 tasting included $14 wines. They have two wines (Tinkling Springs and Harmony) that use the nationally known local artist Pat Moss's art on the label and giving a percentage of the proceeds to her educational charity. They are open 7 days a week.
