The Rear Deck of the Baton Rouge, a Burgess Yacht
At the core of Burgess is a pure love of what they do. Founded in 1975 by Nigel Burgess, it was his love of sailing and his experiences as a worldwide single-handed Ocean Racer that granted him not just the expertise but the sheer passion to bring about what would become one of the world’s most renowned yacht brokerage firms. As he was a seasoned customer of yacht brands himself, the brand he created put a huge emphasis on the customer, making sure their needs were put first which, along with Burgess’ obsessive eye for detail, gained them a worldwide following in no time at all.
From their original office in London, Burgess have grown into a truly international company. With branches spanning the globe, from Monaco to Miami, Palma to New York, each office is led by an exceptional individual whose business skills are only equal to and complemented by that of the team behind them. Burgess is assuredly proud of their elite team, standing among the best in the world, be it in management, customer service or construction.
It took just four years for Burgess to take the important step of acquiring their second office, in Monaco, Yachting capital of the world, where there was huge demand for luxurious beasts such as the MIDNIGHT SAGA, one of the largest yachts in the world throughout the 1970s.
In 1981 Jonathan Beckett joined the company and, his added expertise began to expand their scope. In 1984, on top of their brokerage activities Burgess moved into yacht charter, using their already established expertise to cater for a wider variety of clientele. It was three years later that they expanded further, creating their Yacht Management Division, following the sale of the 86m motor yacht then named the NABILA, now known as KINGDOM 5-KR. To this day, over 25 years on, the yacht is still under the management of Burgess, a testament to the standard of the division.
In November 1992 the company had its first and only major upset. During the Single-Handed Vendee Globe Round the World Race, the company’s founder and long-time Managing Director Nigel Burgess lost his life. Though there was some respite to the tragedy in that he was doing what he loved, Johnathan Beckett was left at the helm.
Under new leadership, Burgess continued to expand, setting up offices in Fort Lauderdale, USA and, at the turn of the millennium, made industry history as the first Yacht Brokerage to receive The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of their business success the presentation of which took place aboard 71m Amels yacht BOADICEA at London’s Tower Bridge.
With this success spurring the company on even further, their New Construction Division was created and the same year the company sold the World’s largest private yacht PLATINUM, a behemoth of near titanic proportions, rounding off a year that cemented Burgess’ place at the top of the world’s yacht brokers.
Over the next decade Burgess’ global expansion continued in earnest, opening 7 separate offices around the world and relocating their Fort Lauderdale office to Miami. This network of new offices, including ones in Mumbai, Athens and New York created an international network of brokerages allowing the company to further dominate their industry.
In 2005, Burgess’ Construction Division were in the midst of designing, developing and constructing 18 individual projects with an average length of 80m each, proving that the company had, thrown themselves full tilt into a construction project that would be the envy of any manufacturer. In April of the same year, a subsidiary of Burgess, Oceanstyle, opened in London, Monaco and Miami. While Burgess itself is a world leader in Superyachts, Oceanstyle complements them perfectly, with their specialty in much smaller sports yachts, further diversifying the Burgess range yet with the experience that customers have come to expect from the Burgess name.
With divisions covering every area of superyachting , Burgess will always have the perfect solution for the diverse requirements of every client. In a relatively short time since their inception, they have become a truly international company and a leader in every aspect of the industry, be it charter or construction, brokering or operational management, growing stronger each passing year and will undoubtedly continue to do so for decades to come.
