After Gordon Ramsey, Thai upscale restaurant Mango Tree is closing this month at The Pearl Qatar - a luxury mixed use complex in Doha which includes luxury residences, retail, dining, marina etc. According to Doha News the closure of Mango Tree is due to the alcohol ban, which was introduced at the end of 2011 and caused a slump in revenues for a number of restaurants and subsequent closures.
The Pearl Qatar is developed by United Development Company (UDC), owned by the highly influential Al Fardan family, which also owns the recently opened St Regis Doha. Many of the retail and dining outlets at Pearl Qatar are operated in franchising by a division of UDC Group.
DTZ Middle East’s Brookes said that the Pearl-Qatar’s reputation is also being impacted by delays in construction, as well as varying quality between residences on the development.
