Beluga caviar, coming to a vending machine near you
Would you? In what may be seen by food purists as an obscene travesty, vending machines proffering caviar and assorted fine dining tidbits are now mushrooming around the trendy Los Angeles district.
Distributors Beverly Hills Caviar has announced that it has installed what it euphemistically calls "unique caviar boutiques" in three Los Angeles malls. According to Beverly Hills Caviar, the vending machines will offer the fast-food gourmet "a large selection of the world's finest Selection of Caviar, Truffles, Escargot, Bottarga, Blinis, oils, Mother of Pearl plates and spoons, gift boxes, and gourmet salts."
The star of the portable "boutiques" will be pots of Imperial River Beluga caviar, which will sell for US$500 per ounce. At that price point, the machines better be fool-proof—we won't want our caviar jars to get stuck in the vending slot!
